Ideas for Pattern Pamphlets/Booklets

On the previous episode of the podcast (ep 5–Title? What Title?), I mentioned the idea of my publishing pattern booklets or pamphlets. I’ve seen a few designers do this before, and it dawned on me that this is actually a fantastic idea. Each could be a small pattern selection, ranging skill level or type, and be a printed publication. I might need to discuss the idea with a friend of mine who has a small press, see if she’s interested, but it could be completely do-able. Even if it’s not a direction in which said friend wants to take her press, there are places I can take the product to that will either print-on-demand, or I can print small runs with.

What do you think? If I were to put small collections into hard-copy, would you be interested enough to purchase any? Were they to be good quality (and I wouldn’t put them out if they weren’t), would you be willing to, for lack of a better phrase, pimp them to others?

What say you?

Also, what kind of designs would you want to see? What would interest you the most?

I’m open to all ideas.

PDF downloadable files are one way to go.

I have seen a lot of patterns available these days like that. If I want it, I pay the $2-$10 paypal or charge card fee and download it immediately. Sure doesn’t help if you are an impulse buyer.

I don’t have to wait for the mail or try to find it at a LYS, and I can store it on my computer. LYS’s can buy this way too, I would assume that they get a discount.

I know you might think about copying, but frankly the few people that might want to make copies to hand out are going to do it no matter what method you use.

Hope this gives you a few ideas, (although you could always make pamplets too).

PS Thanks for the podcast. I know it’s a lot of work. I love listening to fiber podcasts, makes me think I’m at a knit night or something, as I have no groups around my town.

I’d also suggest using downloadable PDFs. I am yet to purchase a pamphlet off of someone’s site that’s printed. I have purchased a half dozen downloaded patterns.

IMO, sell your patterns individually and offer groups of patterns for a discount. That way folks can buy just one, or the whole group.
