Bernat CottonTots :
Bernat CottonTots is a 100% cotton worsted weight yarn. Bernat recommended a hook size of 4.50mm and a gauge of 20s x 26r in 4”x4”. I used a 5.00mm hook and came out with a gauge of 13.5s x 15.5r in 4”x4”.
While this yarn is the lightest of the three here in this post, it doesn’t hold it’s shape well at all. It has the least amount of vertical and horizontal stretch. The stitches also suffer after the stretching as the cotton doesn’t bounce back.
Sensations Bellezza Collection Petalo :
I believe this yarn is discontinued.
Sensations Bellezza Collection Petalo is a 60% cotton, 40% nylon yarn. It doesn’t give a labeled size, but I’m going to refer to it as a worsted since it swatched up in a similar gauge as the others. Sensations recommended a 9.00mm hook (say what?), with a gauge of 10sc x 11 row in 4”x4”. I used a 5.50mm hook and came out with a gauge of 13s x 15r in 4”x4”.
This yarn was only slightly heavier than the CottonTots, but it holds shape and was the most pliant of the three. This thing had some serious movement going on. Very nice. This stretched, vertically and horizontally, fairly well, and bounced back best out of the three yarns.
This feels so nice running through my fingers as I crochet.
Handspun/Handyed, bought off of eBay :
This is a 100% wool that I bought off of a user on eBay. It’s definitely a felting wool as it has no hint of softness. Not one you’d want to wear on the body.
There was no recommended hook or gauge, but it’s a worsted weight and so I went with a 5.50mm hook. My swatch measured out to have a gauge of 14s x 16r in 4”x4” (do you see now why I’m referring to the Sensations yarn as a worsted?).
This yarn had THE MOST STRETCH, but it looked extremely pulled after it’s workout. Less pliant than the other three, as well as the heaviest. Definitely not something I would use in bulk unless I was looking to felt a bag. Which I may end up doing since I have three skeins of this. I love the autumnal colors, though, so that’s good for me.
